Why I Love the Music of the Jesus Movement
I got saved when I was 15 years old—forty-seven years ago now (see pic). I wasn't in the Jesus Movement generation, but I was right behind them—thanks to a volunteer youth leader who kept introducing me to the fresh wind known as Jesus Music. Hence, my love for all things Jesus, the Jesus Movement, the disciplemaking genius of Jesus, and, especially, Jesus music. Besides the Bible and following Jesus with friends, Jesus music has been an amazing blessing and encouragement when I was but a youth—and even unto this day.
Sometimes I feel sorry for the generations that came after the Jesus music generation. I want everyone to know and love the life-changing, Holy Spirit anointed music of Love Song, Keith Green, and Resurrection Band—and everything in between.
Great news! You can enjoy a podcast that has a vast catalog of Jesus Music for FREE! There are hundreds of episodes with lots of great Jesus music from people who were apart of that amazing movement. I've started with the very first podcast and am making my way through all the podcast. I'M LOVING IT.
Contemporary Christian Music—especially the worship genre which I enjoy—nowadays is very popular and even lucrative. You could say it's a well-oiled machine. However, there would be no CCM if it weren't for the Jesus Movement where hippies got legitimately saved and brought their guitars with them to church. Back then, many pastors and church leaders checked the guitars at the door. Thank God there were exceptions.
To be clear, I'm not saying that the Jesus Movement was flawless—for it was not—in many ways. Nevertheless, as I see it, the hippies that really encountered Jesus and the Gospel brought their guitars to their gatherings. The inflow of experiencing the grace, love, and forgiveness that only Jesus Christ can bring produced a deep knowing, loving, and following Jesus together! For that generation, the Bible was rediscovered and the Holy-Spirit organically overflowed something pure, fresh, beautiful, innocent, compelling, simple, and centered on the person of Jesus Christ. It's fairly easy to hear it in the music.
